Erect herbs with short erect rhizomes. Leaves linear, mostly basal. Inflorescence paniculate or corymbose. Perianth segments 6, purplish black, in 2 whorls; the outer whorl slightly shorter than the inner, often convolute around the base of the stamens. Stamens 3. Ovary half-inferior, 3-locular; placentas axile. Fruit a capsule, 8–12 mm diam.; seeds 2 per loculus.
