Annual or perennial herbs or shrubs. Leaves basal or alternate; stipules absent. Flowers in cymes, racemes, spikes or solitary or few in the leaf axils, bisexual, irregular. Sepals 3–5. Corolla tubular often slit open to the base posteriorly; lobes 5, valvate, usually with induplicate winged margins, often hairy on the back except the glabrous wings. Stamens 5, hypogynous or epigynous; anthers free or connate around the style. Ovary superior or inferior, 1–2-locular; stigmatic surface enclosed within a cup-like indusium (Fig. 25), growing out when mature. Fruit a capsule nut or drupe. 11 gen., mostly temp. Australia, few throughout trop.
