Aquatic or terrestrial stoloniferous herbs. Leaves opposite or appearing clustered on suppressed internodes, petiolate, margins entire. Flowers solitary in leaf axils, bracteoles absent. Calyx unequally 3 or 4-lobed, smooth. Corolla 2-lipped, upper lip usually 2-lobed lower lip usually 3-lobed. Stamens 2 or 4, anthers 1-locular. Stigma with 2 flaps, 1 much smaller than the other. Fruit a capsule with 2-locules.
