Glabrous, climbing herb, stems to 4 m long. Leaves 6–20 cm long, alternate, lanceolate, sessile, ending in a tendril. Flowers solitary in leaf axils, yellow to red, pedicels up to 20 cm long. Perianth c. 6 cm long, strongly reflexed. Stamens 6, free. Ovary 3-locular. Style 3-fid bent near base. Capsule 4–10 cm long, 10–20 mm wide. Seeds red. Occasionally naturalized. Introd. from Africa and Asia. Fl. spring–autumn
