Midrib of leaf similar in colour to the surface. Basal leaves spathulate to obovate, 10–12 cm long, 8–20 mm wide. Heads in axillary clusters in a dense spike-like panicle. Involucre 1.5–3 mm diam.; bracts straw-coloured, scarious, hyaline towards the tip. Erect herb up to 40 cm high. Sydney district. Disturbed sites. Introd. from Central and S. America.
