Tufted herbs with narrow often filiform leaves. Spikelets with numerous usually bisexual flowers, solitary, irregularly umbellate or clustered, with unequal narrow involucral bracts some often exceeding the inflorescence. Glumes spirally imbricate; the lowest 1–4 empty. Stamens 1–3. Style 2–3-fid (Fig. 46).
