Tall shrubs or small trees, parasitic on the roots of other plants. Leaves alternate, reduced to minute scales or rudimentary. Branchlets angular-terete sometimes compressed, green. Flowers minute, bisexual or unisexual, in small axillary or terminal spikes or sessile clusters. Perianth divided to the base into 4–5 segments. Ovary superior. Fruit a globular nut resting upon the enlarged succulent pedicel.
