Spikelets with 1 bisexual floret, sometimes with a male floret below it, 2–3 mm long, sometimes awned, usually in 3–4 rows, disarticulating below the glumes, subsessile in dense spike-like racemes placed alternately on the angular rhachis. Lower glume c. one-third the length of the spikelet (Fig. 50f). Annuals with erect geniculate culms.
