Tufted annuals or perennials. Culms erect with prominent nodes. Ligule membranous, sometimes laciniate. Spikelets solitary, shortly pedicellate, dorsally compressed, with numerous bisexual florets, disarticulating above the glumes and between the lemmas, in spike-like racemes arranged along the upper stem. Glumes unequal, membranous, 1-nerved, shorter than the lemmas. Lemmas membranous, 2-fid, notched or truncate, 3-nerved, shortly awned below the apex or from the notch.
