Erect, tufted, shallow-rooted perennials. Spikelets with 1 floret, disarticulating above the glumes, in a dense narrow panicle, often tinged with purple. Glumes subequal, hyaline, subulate. Lemma with a short hairy callus and a dorsal curved or bent usually twisted awn affixed a little below the 2-lobed summit. Leaves glabrous or slightly hirsute. Ligule membranous, lobed or torn-ciliate at the summit.
