Erect hairy annual up to 70 cm tall. Leaves linear, up to 7 cm long, entire. Flowers 3–6 in terminal clusters, with large herbaceous bracts at the base. Calyx up to 20 mm long, 5-toothed. Petals pink, toothed. Stamens 10. Styles 2. Capsule cylindrical, up to 12 mm long, opening by 4 teeth. Widespread but not common. Weed in disturbed ground. Introd. from Europe. Fl. summer.
