Callus at the base of the floret clothed with short hairs. Awn about as long as the lemma or exceeding it, stiff, reflexed. Panicle loose and sometimes spreading, 8–17 cm long, 8–20 mm wide. Glumes often purplish. Tufted perennial 60–120 cm high. Leaf blades ± flat, up to 7 mm wide. Higher altitudes. Wet places. Fl. spring
