Soft-wooded, pubescent shrub or small tree up to 3 m high with an unpleasant odour. Leaves ovate, mostly up to 12 cm long, cordate at the base. Flowers in cymes often resembling racemes. Corolla stellate, pink, c. 20 mm diam. Anthers dehiscing by apical pores. Ovary 2-locular. Fruit an ovoid berry 5–7 cm long, red. Coast. Naturalized in sheltered situations. Introd. from S. America.
