Inflorescence apparently lateral, with 1–2 setaceous bracts; the lower erect, appearing to continue the culm. Culms filiform, 1–8 cm high. Spikelets 1–4, sessile, oblong at maturity, 4–8 mm long, 2–2.5 mm wide, very flat. Glumes green changing to reddish-brown; keel green. Tufted annual with filiform leaves. Widespread. Wet places and damp pastures. Introd. from Africa.
