Monoecious or dioecious trees or shrubs. Leaves opposite, alternate or whorled, linear, flattened, acicular or scale-like. Male cones axillary or terminal with 2–9 microsporangia per scale. Female cones terminal, 1–many fertile scales. Ovules 1–12 per scale. Seed winged or not. Embryo with usually 2 but can be up to 15 cotyledons. 29 gen. world-wide.
