Erect, perennial herbs c. 60 cm high, with corms. Leaves basal and cauline. Flowers sessile in scarious spathes, arranged in compound cymes or spike-like inflorescences. Perianth segments subequal, red to orange-yellow, connate into a curved cylindrical tube. Stamens arranged onto the upper side of the flower. Stylar branches entire, often with a ± dilated denticulate tip. Capsule globular. Garden hybrid escape into waste ground near habitation. Introd. from S. Africa. Fl. summer
