Perennial herbs. Leaves succulent. Flowers bisexual, regular, in terminal panicles or cymes. Sepals 3–6, usually free, sometimes connate into a tube. Petals 3–6, free or connate, often persistent. Stamens as many and alternating with or twice as many as sepals, hypogynous or ± perigynous. Carpels free, 3–6, often with a basal gland; placentas marginal. Fruit a follicle. c. 30 gen., cosmop.
