Erect, annual or perennial herbs with 1–several scapes. Leaves basal (often in a rosette) and sometimes alternate and cauline, entire. Heads grouped into a compound head on a common receptacle and terminal on a scape; each head with a subtending ± herbaceous bract and surrounded by scarious involucral bracts; the compound head globular to hemispherical, up to 25 mm diam., surrounded by a leaf-like involucre. Florets tubular, bisexual. Cypselas silky hairy. Pappus of plumose bristles.
