Erect, annual herb 8–40 cm high, glabrous or ± pubescent. Lower leaves in a rosette, pinnately lobed to entire; upper leaves variable but always clasping the stem with basal auricles. Flowers 2–3 mm diam., in terminal multiple racemes. Petals white. Fruits triangular, 6–9 mm long, with a broad emarginate upper end (Fig. 40 h). Pedicels longer than the fruits, spreading. Seeds 10 or more per loculus, brown or orange. Widespread. Weed of cultivated land and waste places. Cosmop.. Fl. most of the year. Shepherd’s Purse
