Annual or perennial herbs, occasionally shrubs. Leaves alternate, entire or dissected. Heads solitary or clustered, pedunculate. Involucral bracts green or with a scarious margin, in 3–4 rows. Ray florets female, in 1–several rows; rays white pink mauve blue or yellow. Disc florets usually male, tubular, 5-toothed, yellow. Cypselas flattened, cuneate. Pappus of rigid awns with recurved barbs, sometimes with scales alternating with the awns.
