Tufted herbs with fibrous, often tuberous roots. Leaves basal, linear. Flowers arranged in irregular clusters on a scape up to 50 cm high. Perianth segments 6, connate basally, blue to white, spirally twisted over the ovary immediately after flowering; inner segments broader and thinner than the outer, ones. Stamens 6, adnate to the perianth basally. Ovary 3-locular with 2 superposed ovules per loculus; style simple. Fruit a truncate 3-angled capsule.
