Erect herbs with fibrous roots. Leaves few, linear, surrounded by the dead bases of old leaves. Flowers in terminal umbels. Perianth segments 6, free, pale pink or white, convolute around the stamens in the bud, flattened and spreading in flower, deciduous. Stamens 6; filaments flattened basally. Ovary 3-angular, 3-locular, with numerous ovules per loculus. Fruit a capsule. Widespread. Heath and DSF. Milkmaids
