Aquatic, rhizomatous herb. Stems and undersurface of leaves mucilaginous. Leaves alternate, peltate, orbicular to elliptic, 40–120 mm long, 30–90 mm wide, entire, floating. Flowers axillary, solitary, emergent. Perianth segments 6–8, dark red to purplish, narrow-oblong, up to 18 mm long. Stamens 12–40, free. Carpels 6–20, free, superior; ovules 2 per loculus.
