Trees. Leaves entire or lobed. Flowers in axillary panicles, unisexual or polygamous. Calyx petaloid, tubular, 5-lobed. Petals absent. Stamens of male flowers 10–15, connate into a column. Female flowers with 5 nearly or quite free carpels on a short gynophore, with 5 bundles of staminodes at the base. Styles cohering when young but finally separating. Ovules numerous. Fruit of 5 (or fewer by abortion) stalked, hard follicles opening along the inner suture.
