Annual herb to 50 cm high. Culms branched, geniculate near base. Ligule a ciliate membranous rim. Leaf blade 2–3 mm wide. Spikelets bisexual, 3–4 mm long, 1-flowered, disarticulating above the glumes, in 3–5 digitately arranged spikes. Glumes 1-nerved, 3–5 mm long, acute to mucronate. Lemmas c. 2 mm long, densely ciliate on keel and margins. Palea equal to lemma with 2, densely ciliate nerves which end in a point. Toxic to stock. Occasionally flooded areas.
