Glabrous, ± succulent herb to 1 m high. Leaves ovate, 4–2 mm long, margins toothed; petiole with scattered stalked glands. Flowers on long stalks, pink, white or red. Lower sepal petaloid and white, lateral 2 sepals small and green. Petals 5, 10–20 mm long, largest petal keeled, lateral petals slightly fused at base. Stamens 5. Style 5 lobed. Fruit a swollen capsule. Occasional garden escape. Introd. from S. Africa. Fl. all year. Balsam, Busy Lizzie
