Mostly perennial herbs, sometimes with rhizomes. Leaves cauline, alternate. Heads clustered or solitary. Involucral bracts in few to several rows, herbaceous, unequal, imbricate. Receptacle pitted. Ray florets in 1–2 rows; ray white blue red or purple. Disc florets yellow. Cypselas usually compressed. Pappus of numerous bristles in 1–2 rows.
