Perennial herb or shrub to 1 m high. Stems finely ribbed. Leaves opposite, lanceolate to narrow elliptic, 5–15 cm long, 1–3 cm wide. Inflorescence terminal or axillary umbels. Calyx hairy. Corolla red and yellow; lobes 8 mm long. Stigma broad. Follicle smooth, held erect, 6–9 cm long, c. 1 cm wide. Disturbed sites. Introd. from Central America. Fl. spring–summer
