Erect herb to 70 cm high. Leaves linear 10–60 cm long, 5–11 mm wide, bases sometimes red. Inflorescence a lose panicle, spathe bracts brown acuminate 5–14 mm long. Flowers on pedicels 2–10 mm long, opening for only a few hours. Perianth bright blue tube short and green. Stamens exserted, filamens free. Style with 3 branches. Fruit an oblong capsule c. 20 mm long. Occasional garden escape northern suburbs. Introd. from Africa
