Perennial herbs. Leaves with a prominent midrib. Inflorescence terminal on shoots, flowers yellow. Outer perianth fused into a shallowly cleft tube, tube of inner perianth usually shorter than outer. Stamen 1. Staminodes 3; 2 of them short and narrow; the other broadened into a petaloid labellum. Ovary inferior, 3-locular. Fruit a capsule, sometimes fleshy.
