Erect dioecious herb 15–50 cm high. Flowers unisexual, very small, in slender leafless reddish panicles. Perianth valves entire, without tubercles. Leaves petiolate, hastate, with spreading auricles, acid in taste; venation obscure. Stipules silvery white. Widespread. Troublesome weed in gardens and pastures, spreading by rhizomes.
