Annual or short-lived perennial herb up to 1 m high with glandular hairs and a taperoot. Erect and branched. Leaves up to 10 cm long, linear to oblong-lanceolate; the lower ones obovate-oblong. Involucre 20–40 mm diam.; bracts petal-like, bright yellow to reddish-brown. Cypselas glabrous or slightly papillose, 2–3 mm long. Widespread in a variety of situations. Fl. spring.
