Either; leaves alternate on an elongated stem (sometimes opposite when subtending flowers); or, leaves tufted on a short stem or arising from a rhizome
Leaves entire or with 1–2 lobes or minutely toothed
Either; leaves lanceolate or broader; or, with long petioles and broader blades
Petioles several times longer than the blades
Leaf blades held erect, not floating on the surface of the water
Leaf blades floating on the surface of the water
