Stipules small or absent. Fresh or brackish water plants
Stems free in water. (Plant may root at the nodes). Stipules absent
Leaf bases broad and dilated or sheathing the stem (Najas) Hydrocharitaceae
Leaf bases neither broad and dilated nor sheathing the stem
