Spikelets in a compact terminal cluster which may appear lateral since a bract appears to continue the culm. Leaves channelled to appear terete, filiform, less than 1 mm wide Involucral bracts more than 2. Spikelets in a terminal head, 1-flowered. 3–4 lowest glumes empty. Perianth bristles longer than the nut. Nut 3-ribbed, rugose, brown or grey. Culms up to 40 cm high. Widespread. Sandy soils.
