Scales of the rhizome squarrose, persistent, dark brown or purplish brown, narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate. Rhizome (when living) tough, wiry. Lamina dark green, membranous to herbaceous, with a distinct musk scent when fresh or freshly dried. Segments of the pinnatifid fronds 1.2–10 cm long. Fronds 3–50 cm long including the stipes.
