Scales of the rhizome appressed, deciduous, black or purplish brown or dark to light grey, with a brown or light brown border, narrowly lanceolate or ovate. Rhizome (when living) fleshy, often very glaucous. Lamina light green, herbaceous to coriaceous, unscented. Segments of the pinnatifid fronds 1.8–15 cm long. Fronds 3–50 cm long including the stipes.
