Spikelets usually more than 1 in each cluster; basal bract apparently continuing the culm, 2–3(5) mm long. Stamens 1 rarely 2. Nut yellowish or brownish, c. 1 mm long. Leaves linear, less than 1 mm wide; innermost leaf ensheathing each culm and usually reduced to a sheath alone or with a mucro. Erect herb with rhizome, often proliferating. Widespread.
