Rhizomes absent. Panicle compact, 8–15 cm long, 2–3 cm wide, pubescent, with a pink or violet tinge. Spikelets 4–5 cm long; the awn on the upper lemma becoming hooked when dry. Villous tufted perennial up to 1 m high. Leaf blades flat, soft, 7–8 mm wide; ligule membranous. Widespread. Better soils, usually near habitation. Introd. from Europe. Fl. spring–summer.
