Tussock forming herb c. 10 cm wide at base and up to 50 cm high. Leaves narrow mostly 3–4 mm wide. Leaf sheath with uniform crimson markings, ± fully occluded at summit. Inflorescences much shorter than the leaves with 3–10 flowers. Perianth very pale purple, filaments violet, anthers pale to deep purple with a pale yellow swelling beneath. Berry ovoid, obscurely 3-lobed, violet. Restricted to Narrabeen sandstones of Blue Mts between altitude 800–1200 m Dianella tenuissima
