Tufted perennial up to 1.5 m high, without rhizomes. Culms not usually bent at a basal node or nodes. Lobes of the lemma up to 1.5 mm long. Leaf blades 2–5 mm wide. Panicle ovoid to oblong, sometimes interrupted towards the base, up to 10 cm long and 5 cm wide. Widespread. Open forest and grasslands. Fl. spring–summer Echinopogon caespitosuscaespitosus
