At least 3–8 spines per areole. Spines terete 2–4 cm long, darkening with age. Segments obovate and compressed, bright green. Leaves to 4 mm long red-tipped. Perianth yellow. Staminal filaments pink. Fruit obovoid, reddish. Not common. Introd. from S. America. Opuntia elatior
Areoles with 1 or 2 spines at most, rarely more.
