Either leaves with distinct long laminas or reduced to sheathing scales at the base of the culm
Nut whitish, acutely 3-angular. Panicle ± spreading, reddish-brown, c. 30 cm long. Leaves terete or slightly compressed, septate but air spaces between septa filled with looser tissue, usually as long as the culms. Glumes with or without cilia. Rhizomatous perennial up to 1 m high.
