Leaves terete or compressed and more than 2 mm wide or even reduced to the sheaths
Either leaves with distinct long laminas or reduced to sheathing scales at the base of the culm
Nut brown, obtusely 3-angular
Leaves articulate with broad white septa separating large air spaces, often as long as the culms, 4–12 mm wide. Panicle spreading, lax, grey-brown, 20–50 cm long. Usually lower or middle flower perfect, sometimes upper 2 perfect. Glumes without cilia. Rhizomatous perennial 1–2 m high. Coast. Wet places Baumea articulata
Either leaves not septate or if septate then the spaces filled with looser tissue (subseptate)
