Palea with a deep central groove. Ligule 2–8 mm long. Awn 2–4 cm long; the column of the awn c. 10 mm long, tightly twisted; the terminal bristle straight. Lemma 5 mm long, 1 mm diam. at the widest point near the summit, dark coloured, with white hairs. Glumes unequal, lower 10–12 mm, upper 7–8 mm long, hyaline, subulate. Panicle narrow, 10–20 cm long. Leaf blades terete, 16–18 cm long. Plants up to 80 cm high. Not common. Clay soils. Fl. most of the year Austrostipa setacea
