Leaves lobed, lyrate, toothed, mostly basal, oblanceolate, up to 25 cm long and 6 cm wide, toothed; upper surface glabrous or pubescent but not white-tomentose. Rays yellow, purplish to greenish below, 15–25 mm long. Disc florets very dark purplish. Annual herb with a rosette of leaves; peduncles up to 30 cm high. Widespread.
