Plants glabrous except the young tips of the branches and the nodes. Leaves linear-lanceolate or narrow-oblong to oblanceolate and obovate, from less than 1 to 6 cm long, up to 6 mm wide.
Inner bracts 1.5–2.5 mm long. Perianth segments lanceolate, 2–3 mm long. Leaves 20–60 mm long. Flower clusters 4–8 mm diam., sessile. Fruits not much shorter than the perianth. Widespread. Margins of swamps and rivers. Weed of pastures and waste places. Lesser Joyweed Alternanthera denticulata
