Erect or ascending, perennial herb 4–30 cm high. Leaves basal and cauline, variously hairy; lower leaves obovate to oblong, contracted into a long petiole, bluntly and distantly toothed, 4–12 cm long, passing gradually into small sessile entire upper floral leaves. Flowers in false whorls of 6–20. Calyx 5-toothed, 4–7 mm long. Corolla blue or purple, variable in size up to 20 mm long; lower lip long and spreading, 3-lobed, the middle lobe larger and emarginate. Stamens 4, in pairs, exserted. Articles rugose. Widespread. Open forests. Mostly on shale. Fl. most of the year. Australian Bugle Ajuga australis
